Does the thought of retirement concern you? Worry you? Frighten you? Although financial considerations are a major factor influencing retirement, there are many other issues to consider, including (but not limited to): How? - Abrupt or gradual?
When? - Many factors will affect this decision: age, health, money, family, practice partners, ego
Why? - Some people never want to retire; others can't wait
What Then? - This may be the most difficult question to answer for many highly motivated surgeons who are accustomed to long hours and little free time. The thought of not having a tight schedule or packed agenda may frighten some of us. There are many options: Figure out a new way to practice medicine or hand surgery Find a new medically related niche, get a new job entirely unrelated to medicine, jump into or do more volunteer activities, cultivate or expand existing or new hobbies, travel, a combination of many activities.
One of the major emphases of this course is that PLANNING AHEAD is critical to successful retirement. One should not wait until it is time to collect Social Security to begin thinking about what he or she is going to do now. The ideal time to begin planning for retirement is probably about 5-10 years before you think you are going to make this major transition in your life.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand that planning ahead is imperative for successful retirement.
- Be able to define some of the many factors that will affect ones retirement.
- Gain an appreciation for the wide range of options to consider when making this transition.
